Ancient Runes Assignment Three: Casting

Since I wasn’t sure which of the five original rune casts that we were supposed to perform, I did four of them. Because the fifth original rune cast, known as the Three Lifetime’s Rune Cast, deals with reincarnation, and the Ministry will only allow that to be performed by a High Priest or Priestess who has mastered Runic magic and only under very controlled conditions.
The first cast is called Odin’s Rune Cast. You pick one rune from the bag and it tells you everything about the question. My question was…What will be my part in the upcoming war against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named? My interpretation of the runes will be in bold.
The first rune I drew from the bag was Laguz (Lah-gooze), the water rune. Laguz means water which is a vital part of life but also presents a constant danger. Laguz contains elements of fluidity, changeability, and a lack of control. It represents the sensual madness of sexuality, the unconscious, intuitive, and psychic abilities. Its deceptive elements come from its variety, rather than from any menace. Traditionally, Laguz is the ultimate female rune.
The personal interpretation is only by tuning in to creation will your life truly flow as it is meant to. Emotional balance comes from harmony with creation around you. For example, natural foods lead to natural flow, whereas unnatural foods lead to disharmony and stagnation. The sea is always fluid and moving, so it should be with your life. Embrace change itself, for it is the only true constant in life.
Applying that to my question, I will need to be flexible in my decision making regarding the war. I’ll have to be very careful not to make snap decisions without thinking through all the consequences. I need to take another look at some of my personal beliefs and reevaluate them. I must take charge of my own future and not blindly flow along with the current, especially if the current is flowing in the wrong direction. I must embrace the changes that are happening and learn to put my own unique qualities to more productive uses instead of trying to control every little single element. I need to learn to trust more and have faith in myself and those who stand with me.
The answer to the question is that I will be on the side of light since I need to adjust some of my beliefs and the way I see things. I will help as much as I can without placing myself in the direct line of fire. I could use my transformation skills to deceive and slow down the enemy or my potions skills to brew potions.
The second traditional rune cast is the Three Rune Cast. Three runes are drawn and laid from right to left in a straight line. The first rune (Right) tells about the situation as it is now. The second rune (Center) suggests a course of action or an obstacle that must be overcome. The third rune (Left) foretells the outcome which will result from that action…the best possible outcome if the obstacle is overcome.
I kept my first rune, Laguz, and placed it on the right. My second rune, Raido, was placed in the center. Finally, my third rune, Othila, was placed on the left.

Raido can therefore refer to the journey of life (the wheel of life), or to a spiritual quest. Raido might also mean transport or communication, such as delivering or receiving a message.

Align your lifestyle to the seasons and honor the turning of the year. Embrace hard times knowing that the harder it is now, the easier it will get in the future. Everything has its opposite, and challenges bring equal and opposite rewards.

I can’t travel to another country or try to deny this war is real and it’s going to take great fortitude to endure and overcome. I must stay the course and never falter in my determination, regardless of how hard things get. My rewards will come in time.
The third rune, Othila (Oh-thee-law), means home or homeland, hearth, family, inheritance, estate, possessions, acquisition, or benefit through inheritance or birthright. Fair play, great mental capacity, adventurous nature. cultural maturity, personal skill, adaptability. love of family, home and homeland, and patriotism are the characteristics of this rune. The honest and just are destined for great wealth.
Othila means the ancestral country or home, property, and fixed wealth or inheritance. This can include your inherited characteristics from past generations that you will also pass on to your children – or it can represent a united family's strength. Othila can be seen as everything that you have accumulated during your lifetime, and can also represent your spiritual home.
Since this rune is placed on the left and represents the best possible outcome, I think it’s safe to say that if I stay the course and be true to myself, I shall be richly rewarded. I will still have the love and respect of my family as well as all my family’s wealth and influences.

Dagaz means day, and in the Nordic lands of long nights and winters, the day is strongly associated with light and life. It is the essence of natural daylight, the new light of dawn, and the strength of the sun. Spiritually, it is the divine light, the high point of the natural cycle of darkness-light-darkness. It signifies brightness, growth, progress, development, and sometimes fundamental change. It represents a breakthrough, a new dawn or a major change of direction, achievement and prosperity, a successful conclusion to a passage. Darkness is behind you because a new day has begun.
He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is trying to change the entire wizarding world. That is the very basis of the war.
Jera (Year-ah) was the next rune I drew and it was placed in the far center position which represents the challenge that must be overcome. Jera represents the 12 months of the year. It implies fruitfulness, profit or achievement of a goal. It also means the cycle of seasons implying movement, change, and natural development. .It is usually very positive, but as a symbol of cause-and-effect it may portend the end-result of past actions. Jera may therefore represent justice, which can be positive or negative, a reward or a punishment.
Clearly, this means that I must watch out for He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and his brand of justice. I must stay on course and not get caught up in his personal crusade…that is my challenge.
The final rune I added here was Uruz (Oor-ooze). It was placed at the far position which foretells the outcome. Uruz encompasses physical strength, endurance, courage, and the raw, wild power of freedom. It includes emotional and spiritual strength, male sexual potency, and good health. It can also imply a challenge leading to a major life change. This rune was reversed which means failure to think clearly, ill-health or lack of mental fortitude. Beware signs of weakness, or threats to your person or position.
The outcome here will be a major life change for me if I can stay the course. Unfortunately, I will suffer in this endeavor. I must be hurt in the war, but even though I’m injured, I will be able to regain my full strength as long as I don’t falter in my path. It also means that I will suffer from prejudicial claims, but that’s a given considering I’m a Slytherin and not seen as anything but a death-eater wannabe.

The bottom right rune represents the one asking the question and is known as the significator. The second rune reveals the inner self and cast middle row right. The third rune is cast top row right and deals with the goals or ideals of the Questioner (known as the Querent). The fourth rune is cast top row middle to represent the past. The fifth rune is cast at the center of the square and tells of family matters. The sixth rune is cast bottom row middle and deals with the Querent's health. The seventh rune is cast bottom row left and speaks of religious matters. The eighth rune is cast middle row left and represents the Querent's friends. The final rune is cast top row left and reveals the final outcome of the matter.
I kept all the original runes I’d drawn and placed them in the proper order. Lagus represents me and my uncertainty. Raido represents my inner self and desire to run away and not deal with the war at all. Othila represents my ideals which are centered on my family and my birthright remaining untarnished. Dagaz represents my past which was all about achievement and prosperity…being number one no matter the costs. Jera represents family matters and shows how my family has always been successful in all endeavors. Uruz represents my health and since it’s reversed, I know I’ll have some health issues.
Wunjo (Vun-yoh) is placed in the Religious matters position. It means understanding, realization of ambition, success in romance, good health, partnerships flourish, new beginnings are blessed with joyfulness and eyes are opened to the truth. It is linked to a reward, a feeling of goodness and satisfaction, peaceful winning, and ultimate achievement. It contains the idea of everything going well because you are in total harmony with life. It also implies close co-operation and companionship with other people, because joy is not usually a solitary emotion. When so much of life can be negative, it is important to allow Wunjo’s joy to reach into every part of your life.
However this rune was also reversed which means misunderstandings, stalled ambition, difficulty with partnerships or romantic endeavors and not a good time for new ventures.
Since it was placed on the religious matters, I will have difficulty with my faith and must remain vigilant. If I don’t keep sight of my faith, I’ll suffer dire consequences.
Algiz (Awl-gh-eeze) was placed in the friend’s position. It is a powerful rune of protection and, spiritually, it symbolizes reaching up to the divine. Algiz also represents success through endeavor in a search, quest, or other enterprise. Like the fast-growing pine tree, schemes will develop quickly. Like sharp sedge, you are protected from attack. Alertness and awareness will be your guide. Wisdom, vision and clarity of mind will aid your cause.
Clearly, this means that even though I may falter along the way, my friends will remain loyal and true, helping me to overcome all obstacles to reach my goals. They will protect me from outside enemies as well as from my own mistakes.
Ehwaz (Ay- wahz) was the final rune and it was placed in the outcome position. Ehwaz implies controlled change, progress, and sometimes a journey. It also represents partnership, trust, loyalty, and faithfulness, such as that between horse and rider, brother and sister, two halves of the whole. However, this rune was in converse which means that which appears stagnant will suddenly move. Someone willing or confident will be up to no good.
Again, this states that there will be people against me after the war. Even though I will fight on the side of light to the best of my abilities, I will still suffer some indignities. Regardless, I will have my family and my friends at my back, so I’ll endure.
**NOTE** I used the Elder Runes which are considered the only Magical Runes among all Purebloods. I realize that the Anglo-Saxon runes are used by some of the students here at Hogwarts, but I prefer not to use the Muggle version.
